Recent changes in mountain birch forest structure and understory vegetation depend on the seasonal timing of reindeer grazing

چکیده

Subarctic forest-tundra ecotones dominated by mountain birch (Betula pubescens ssp. czerepanovii) are an important habitat for semi-domestic reindeer Rangifer tarandus. The seasonal timing of grazing may direct vegetation trajectories in these systems, because the summer ranges, birches subjected to browsing, while winter feed on understorey and arboreal lichens but leave intact. Based earlier research, we predicted that (a) browsing dampens ongoing ‘shrubification’ semi-dry dry forests (b) is accompanied a decline lichens. We tested predictions through re-analysing forest structure after 12 years areas where ranges had been separated since 1980s. also how changes lichen abundances align with shrub correlation analyses. number tall seedlings increased twice as fast than big ranges. dominant evergreen dwarf crowberry (Empetrum nigrum hermaphroditum) greater extent semidry habitat, habitat. Deciduous graminoid biomass similarly found no evidence support increasing contributed lichens; instead, cover seedlings. Synthesis application. subarctic depend greatly whether area used or range reindeer. recent likely lead improved forage availability reindeer, opposite be true availability.

The impact of meteorological drought and grazing on the vegetation structure in aridlands (Case study: Nakhab Forest, Khosf County)

Drought and grazing rangelands play an important role in changing the structure of vegetation and losing the biodiversity of natural ecosystems. In this research, in order to determine the effects of drought and livestock grazing on the vegetation structure of rangelands located in the Nakhab Forest of South Khorasan Province, species abundance, biodiversity, and range condition and trend were ...

the effects of changing roughness on the flow structure in the bends

flow in natural river bends is a complex and turbulent phenomenon which affects the scour and sedimentations and causes an irregular bed topography on the bed. for the reason, the flow hydralics and the parameters which affect the flow to be studied and understand. in this study the effect of bed and wall roughness using the software fluent discussed in a sharp 90-degree flume bend with 40.3cm ...

Diversity and composition of understory vegetation in the tropical seasonal rain forest of Xishuangbanna, SW China.

Tropical forests vegetation and community research have tended to focus on the tree component, and limited attention has been paid to understory vegetation. Species diversity and composition of the understory of tropical seasonal rain forest were inventoried in a 625 m2 area (for sapling layer) and a 100 m2 area (for herb/seedling layer) in three 1 ha plots. We found 3068 individuals belonging ...

Recent changes in mountain grasslands: a vegetation resampling study.

Understanding how land-use changes affect different facets of plant biodiversity in seminatural European grasslands is of particular importance for biodiversity conservation. As conclusions of previous experimental or synchronic observational studies did not converge toward a general agreement, assessing the recent trends in vegetation change in various grassland systems using a diachronic appr...
